They have become aware that scammers are impersonating PPL by copying their phone number, calling customers, and demanding payments with prepaid cards. If customers don’t comply with the request, the scammers threaten to shut off their electricity.
If you receive a call like this, hang up and check the status of your account by visiting pplelectric.com or calling PPL at 1-800-DIAL-PPL (1-800-342-5775). PPL never demands immediate payments and always provides advanced notice to customers in jeopardy of having their electricity shut off.
Follow these tips to protect yourself from scammers.
- Understand PPL’s process. They will notify you when there’s a scheduled shutoff and won’t pressure you to use specific payment methods.
- Don’t trust caller ID. Scammers can make it look like PPL is calling you, even when they are not. If the call seems suspicious, hang up and call us directly at 1-800-DIAL-PPL (1-800-342-5775).
- Add an extra layer of security to your account. Add a PIN or password to your PPL account and never give it to anyone who calls you. We’ll verify your PIN or password whenever you contact us, so we know it’s really you.
- Update your email address and phone number. Let us know if your email address or phone number changes so you don’t miss important messages.
